3270 and 5250 are the generic names of a family of IBM terminals, controllers, and associated software that use a synchronous protocol to communicate with a host.

3270/5250 applications transmit information on a screen-by-screen basis where each screen is made up of individual fields.

Each field may have different attributes (e.g., color, blink, non-display), as well as status information designed to tell the user the progress and status of a screen transmission.
