A monochrome bitmap that is compiled with the application will be displayed in two colors (black background with white foreground by default) and compiled color bitmaps are displayed in 16 or 256

 

The background and foreground colors are used in compiled monochrome bitmap images to specify the two colors to display the image in, but only the background color has significance in color bitmap images. As with other region types, the user can change these colors at runtime.

If you specify an image map, the image map colors override the foreground and background color specifications.
